Escaping Single-Parent Holiday Hell to House-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Journey
Following the marriage ended, I naively thought vacations as a single parent would be easy. Quickly discovered they proved often extremely expensive, otherwise appeared only suitable for “conventional” households, or else were so cheap that I came home more knackered than before I’d left.
Initial Holiday Experiences
My first endeavor, tenting alongside companions, was fine until the moment came to dismantle the tent. Four hours of struggling with the tent in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Next, an adventurous holiday for single-parent families. Rappelling and caving were brilliant, but resting in a bunkbed wrecked my back. We attempted a budget all-inclusive on the island, but the crowds of traditional families were overwhelming, and poolside chats with fellow ladies fizzled out since I didn’t come with a handy husband for their husbands to talk to. A trip to Mallorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was eye-watering.
Discovering Pet-Sitting
Then, last autumn, an acquaintance asked if we’d house-sit her dogs within the county while she went to a wedding. For one tranquil couple of days, we walked along the shore, and curled up near the fireplace in the evening. This prompted to house-sitting for her associate in the region, and it proceeded well. Inspired, I paid an yearly £99 fee to join a pet-sitting platform, where, in exchange for looking after people’s pets, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a 10-day pet-sit within the county, caring for a labrador called Buzz while his owners traveled overseas.
Each day's strolls gave us the opportunity to discover stunning natural settings.
It was the initial assignment for unknown individuals, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we arrived the gorgeous spacious house and met the calm Buzz, who lived for tummy rubs. Each day's dog walks gave us the opportunity to explore stunning nature spots, and, after we came back, we were able to relax in the garden for important conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” characters in the BBC sitcom. There were any expensive tourist traps to wander around – instead, we perused bookstores, treated ourselves to manicures, and went on kayak trips. I experienced lighter and happier than I had in years, and could feel my bond with my daughter Polly strengthen every day. I don’t afraid to say that I cried from joy. Life seemed possible again.
Could Pet-Sitting for You?
Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Some people want no responsibilities during vacations apart from choosing their next beverage, aren’t fond of dogs or cats, or perhaps feel odd regarding staying in a stranger’s bed, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out their bins. But the soothing pace of ordinary living, with work removed and fresh locations to explore, suits me for me.
This prevents myself from descending into complete inactivity, a state that makes me experience restless and oddly empty. Moreover, financially, house-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day getaway in a comparable property within the identical area we stayed could cost me back approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.
An Alternative Perspective
As for staying in a stranger’s home, I discovered it nourishing. Although house-sitting is a transaction, it’s also an expression of faith between strangers and creatures, which has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured side, full of appreciation for the people and places we discover. I’ve already lined up an additional short break off, caring for a whippet in leafy Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to attempt house-sitting overseas. Due to a touch of creative planning, we are able to see the world from the coziness of a home – it just happens to be someone else’s.
