Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
