Heavy Downpours Worsen Circumstances for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, UN Caution
Heavy rains over the past week have worsened the already dire circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of evacuated civilians in the region, as stated by relief organizations.
"Terrible" Night Creates Grave Dangers
A official detailed the previous night's conditions as "awful", with precipitation so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"Last night was truly horrendous for the residents. The downpours were so powerful... And the gusts were so forceful," said the spokesperson.
Authorities voice significant anxiety that minors residing in temporary structures in damp clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Fatalities and Extensive Destruction
Medical officials have stated that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have been killed in roof cave-ins triggered by the harsh conditions.
Additional accounts indicate a greater number of casualties. Spokespeople said that multiple homes had totally fallen and dozens had sustained partial collapse.
- Almost 55,000 families harmed by flooding.
- More than 40 designated shelters severely flooded.
- Numerous individuals compelled to find new shelter.
Aid Operations Seen as Inadequate
Organizations have stepped up shipments of tents, warm covers and garments after the halt in hostilities started, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid entering.
"Officials are operating tirelessly to bring in that relief and to allocate it, but the size of the requirements is so vast that we still have a great number of people and minors who are genuinely struggling each evening," warned one spokesperson.
Future Challenges and Ceasefire Terms
The second phase of the ceasefire includes plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of troops, and other conditions.
Relief bodies have stressed the need for "expanded and ongoing humanitarian assistance to address immediate and future needs."
The hostilities was initiated by an offensive in October 2023. Later campaigns have led to a significant number of casualties in the region, based on medical figures.
