King Charles Officially Strips Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity

In a definitive action, the reigning monarch has officially stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his princely title.

These alterations were made official by publishing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were recorded in the Gazette.

The official notice declared: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall cease to be entitled to possess the style, title or attribute of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”

A separate entry affirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.

The notice stated: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be struck from the peerage roll.”

Context of the Decision

The decision comes after increasing controversy over the former prince's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

The author alleged that she was assaulted by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has consistently strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Title Removal

Charles employed his monarchical powers—accepted authorities held by the sovereign—after discussions with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through parliamentary means.

Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or remove titles and honors.

Since the Royal Highness designation is conferred by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.

Further Measures and Support

After the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to prepare the necessary documents for the title removals.

The decision also involves Andrew relinquishing his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for two decades.

Officials endorsed the monarch's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
