Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's historic comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
