The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is avoiding a return to football management, pointing out that it would be tough to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

He expressed his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the youth and countering what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook currently prevalent in the country.

Embracing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

In a recent radio interview, the manager was asked about speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the release of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate emphasized that he is deeply committed about providing role models for young people, utilizing lessons from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate believes that his journey coaching England, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, the coach commented: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Common Ground Above Discord

Southgate stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s forthcoming book, Dear England, is scheduled to offer further insights on leadership and country pride based on his remarkable time in football.
