The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
