When Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous local residents, heard pops echoing around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her residence, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, talking to a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He was sprinting into something that surely every instinct would instruct you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and ambulance crews attending to many those hurt.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the violence becoming a impromptu medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the water to assist people in distress.

After the tragedy, statements of support were shared. A social media message expressed gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of rescuers later shared a message, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care for our responders,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the second the shooting commenced through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a mayor.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in keeping our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
